Sharisse Coulter – Why Choosing Your Setting is Important

Why Choosing Your Setting is Important

by Sharisse Coulter

Setting, not surprisingly, is a vital component in any story. It plays the role of a silent character, adding to the credibility of the narrative, providing texture and context. In some stories it features prominently, like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. In others, it is merely an afterthought. Or so it may seem.

Every choice an author makes to set a story in some time and place affects the underlying tone and feel of the story. Is it urban? Suburban? Remote? Small town? Foreign? What about climate? Is it an unforgiving landscape or a cozy retreat? Is it a familiar modern setting, or maybe dystopian, or even otherworldly? All these questions must be asked and answered in order to ground the narrative. For example, imagine what The Hunger Games would have been like set in modern day New York. Or Pride and Prejudice set in Cold War Moscow? It would significantly change the way the reader expected the story to play out.

Setting informs the reader how they should expect characters to speak, to interact with one another, whether to be on the edge of their seat or give them permission to relax and reflect. If, say, your characters are on a river raft heading toward a waterfall, it can add tension and suspense. Or you could have an emotional scene where a protagonist has just been fired over the phone while in a bounce house full of kids, providing levity. These may not be great examples, but they make the point.

In the best stories, the setting will work in constant cooperation with the characters and plot to ground the reader in time and place, while subtly directing their emotions. The best settings pull the reader in from all senses, almost without notice, that’s how engrossed they become in the story and its characters. It makes the story feel real, even in fantasy, and takes the reader on a sensory experience, making them “feel” the cold wind whipping their face, “hear” the leaves crackling beneath the feet, “smell” the freshly baked bread from the patisserie downstairs, “taste” the salty tears on their cheeks, and “see” the castle’s turret peeking through the clouds.

So the next time you sit down to write a story, think about the setting like a set designer for a film. Explore your setting through each of your senses, even if you don’t include all the details for your reader. Know how subtle changes in color, temperature, landscape and lighting will impact your story, and ask yourself: “Does it add to the story or take away from the mood?” If you, the writer, connect with your setting and make it “real” to you, then congratulations, you’re ready to take your reader and show them around.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing? I’m not very comfortable writing love scenes… :o

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? In 1988, I was reading a lot of Star Trek novels after my company moved me to a new city where I didn’t know anyone. I decided I wanted to write one, so I wrote one in a spiral notebook in pencil. That was when I knew I wanted to be a writer.

How long have you been writing? Since 1988 as a hobby, then to be published in the last 5 years.

What inspires you to write and why? I’ll have an idea pop in my head and I become intrigued and want to explore it.

What genre are you most comfortable writing? Paranormal romance or mystery

Who or what influenced your writing once you began? Reading widely in a variety of genres and voraciously.

What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general? With many crafts you can finish them in a day or week. Do you have any upcoming appearances that you would like to share with us? I’m doing a crazy amount of blog tours in the next three months for several of my books. Hope to see ya’ll out there.

Author Interview – Marti MacGibbon

Marti MacGibbon, human trafficking survivor and recovering addict, is an author, humorous inspirational speaker and standup comic who holds four professional certifications in addiction treatment, including the ACRPS, Advanced Certified Relapse Prevention Specialist. Marti is a member of the National Speakers Association and her articles have appeared in numerous trade publications and magazines. She’s been interviewed in Investors Business Daily and Entrepreneur.

Marti was one of the first women to work as a laborer in the Texas oilfield. She set off explosives for an exploration company for a brief period of time and then learned surveying skills, staking oil wells. She moved on to standup comedy and was scheduled for an appearance on The Tonight Show, but Marti became entangled in the California drug scene and plunged into the underworld and serious drug addiction. After being trafficked to Japanese organized crime and escaping, she suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and was homeless for over a year, but ultimately found true love, recovery and forgiveness. Her darkly humorous and dramatic memoir, “Never Give in to Fear,” tells the story, and the narration brings alive a host of quirky characters and bungling criminals.

“Never Give in to Fear” has received critical praise from Foreword Clarion and San Francisco Book Review. The enhanced edition, “Never Give in to Fear: Laughing All the Way Up from Rock Bottom,” received an editorial recommendation from Kirkus Reviews and an award for Best Revised Edition from Books-and-Authors.net.

What’s your favorite place in the entire world? — Can I have two faves? Sonoma County, California, in the Russian River Valley. That’s where I met my true love, my husband Chris. And Los Angeles! I love L.A.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing? — My father was an English professor who taught me to love literature. My mom was a voracious reader. They introduced me to the classics and contemporary writers, and took time to discuss books with me. And I grew up in a very funny family, which is one reason why my memoir, Never in to Fear, isn’t a downer. It has a lot of funny moments even though it talks about scary and tragic experiences.

How long have you been writing? – I began writing in 2002, in English class, with a narrative essay. I got an A+ and newfound confidence. I began writing Never Give in to Fear in 2004, with a working title, Long Odds, because the odds were against my surviving, let alone finding love, healing, and prosperity after all my past experiences. I took a few years off from writing to go to school and train as an addiction treatment professional, and after completing my training and accepting a position as a program counselor to homeless veterans, I gave all my time and effort to my job and to my clients. But my passion for continuing the work I’d begun on Never Give in to Fear spurred me to finish it.

Who or what influenced your writing once you began? — My top goal was to not be boring. I included lots of the stories that I’d told in front of audiences, the real crowd-pleasers that were theater-tested. And I studied films and learned how a story unfolds. I also went to a really good screenwriting conference in L.A. and learned some important things, such as the arc of a story or scene, the development of characters, and the power of true stories. This knowledge helped me to make Never Give in to Fear a gripping read.

Who or what influenced your writing over the years? – My professor, Dr. Wallis, by encouraging me. And reading good books helps a writer. I’m kind of a geek in that I’ve read a lot of classics – I’ve read the Iliad several times. I’ve studied mythology. From time to time I read Anna Karenina or Brothers Karamazov. I love sci-fi and fantasy, too. I read George R. R. Martin’s entire Game of Thrones series in a month or two. Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 rocks.

Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it? – Writing Never Give in to Fear taught me to embrace my past, learn from it, and whenever possible, look back and laugh. This is the message I want to give my readers.

Do you intend to make writing a career? – I’m still writing books. I also blog on my website, martimacgibbon.com. And from my speeches and standup, I continually come up with more stories for books.

Have you developed a specific writing style? – I’ve found my own rhythm and pace. Readers tell me that when they read my book, it’s as if I’m talking to them. And one reviewer on goodreads.com mentioned that as she read my book, she felt as though a good friend was confessing to her. And here’s an excerpt from a recent editorial review: “Her raw, honest, casual, funny voice permeates every page.” – Kirkus Reviews.

Did you find that the cover and title represented what the story was really about? No I do not feel the cover represents the content. Several older book club members stated they immediately connected with the cover.

Orangeberry Book of the Day – Genetically Modified Foods vs. Sustainability – Bruno McGrath

clip_image001
“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” – Albert Einstein
This ebook points out the surrounding issues of genetically modified fruit and vegetables that consumers are unaware of. While several parties defend the use of technology to create food, there seems to be little being done to increase awareness about this matter to the end consumer. It also points out alternative food sustainability options such as organic farming and land management.
This ebook will indicate that although some parties agree that genetically modified food items are cost effective and considered safe, its long-term results have not been adequately researched and the use of pesticides on these items are far higher than for other types farming or food products.

Author Interview – James Robinson Jr.

What is your favorite quality about yourself? The quality that I enjoy the most about myself is my sense of humor. Unfortunately, I have type of humor that can turn some people off because it tends to be a bit sarcastic or sardonic. First drafts of the book were so sarcastic that they had to be toned down significantly in later drafts and I eventually developed a style which may be subtle and witty but lacks the hard-core sarcasm. Consider the title of Chapter 2: The Day My Butt Said Goodbye.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why? I have always liked the quote from the Indian warrior Crazy Horse who, before the battle of the Little Big Horn, was heard to say: “It’s a good day to live, it’s a good day to die. Brave hearts to the front. Cowards and weak hearts to the rear.” I like the quote because I think it speaks to the courage to take life as it comes and to live life on your own terms. In the book, I have an entire chapter devoted to death and state that the hope that—when I’m confronted with death—I will make Crazy Horse proud, that I will put my life in God’s hands and accept my fate with grace and bravery. At the end of the chapter I recommend—tongue in cheek—that a drill sergeant wake us up every day and drum into us the fact that every day is a blessing and that we should live every day as if it were our last.

What is your favorite food? This is a weird question for me. I don’t really have a favorite food. I definitely don’t eat right. This much I can say. I stay away from vegetables as much as possible. Asparagus makes me want to vomit. I guess I’m a basic kind of guy: hamburgers, hot dogs, spaghetti, fried chicken. My big thing is drinks. I don’t drink alcohol including beer but I will go to a particular restaurant because they serve frozen or slushie drinks.

How long have you been writing? I was an English major in college and I did a lot of fiction writing there in addition to writing term papers about authors such as Shakespeare and Eugene O’Neil. But I really had no idea what writing was all about after this little bit of exposure to it. I graduated in 1974. I always wanted to continue writing after that and made writing my goal but I forced to take a long hiatus when I got married at age 24 and had three children in four years. I mention in the book that friends and family often said that I had “gotten the children out of the way.” I never understood that one—that certainly wasn’t my goal. By the time I began my modest writing career it was 1994 and that was when I got the idea to write about midlife and I started Fighting the Effects of Gravity. But there was no digital/online revolution at that time and I spent most of my time—years actually—honing my skills, looking for agents, paying for edits, and being turned down by publishers.

When did you first know you could be a writer? I realized that I could be a writer when I started writing Fighting the Effects of Gravity and something clicked for me; I discovered a style that of writing that I didn’t know I had. Writing non-fiction and writing about my own life gave me a new insight on writing. I realized that maybe non-fiction was a better fit for me because of my sense of humor and style.

What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general? I’m in the process of writing a novella now which is challenging due to the elements of character and story development but I find that in all writing the hardest thing is getting started. I usually brainstorm with a pencil and pad before I sit down at the computer but that doesn’t make it a whole lot easier. First drafts can be absolutely dreadful! It seems like every time I write a first draft I read it over the next day and say to myself, there is no way this is going to work! I think when I was younger and wrote a first draft it may have stopped me from going any further because it was so bad. I have to keep reminding myself of something that the poet Maya Angelou once said to Oprah Winfrey: “I have never known writing to be anything other than hard work.” So, when I hear someone say how much they love writing I can’t help but think of what hard work it is and how awful those first drafts read!
