Author Interview – Alan Nayes

Who designed the cover? The talented Regina Wamba at Mae I Design and Photography She did a great job I think you’ll agree!

Who is your publisher? THE LEARNER is indie published.

Why did you choose to write this particular book? I’ve written horror, thrillers, and romance, but always had this nebulous idea of writing a novel involving an alien being from deep space who visits us—but I never had anything specific to put down on paper. Would it be science fiction or horror or thriller or some combination of the three. I couldn’t decide so I kept shelving the idea and went on to other projects. Then one evening I was driving home late at night through the hills near my home and the road was virtually deserted. I had this weird thought of what if I suddenly looked ahead and accidently hit someone, a young beautiful woman—yeah, I know weird. I would stop, but when I went to where the person was supposed to be, she was suddenly gone. I know I hit her, yet she’d vanished! That’s when my opening scene to THE LEARNER hit me. This imaginary beauty had been an alien and she’d healed herself and then vanished because she didn’t wish to be discovered by an Earthling. After that night the story took on a tangible shape and focus. The opening scene was changed eventually to a terrible bus accident, but after that initial impulse idea, I finally had my story.

What was the hardest part about writing this book? For me, the most challenging part of writing THE LEARNER was developing the relationship between the main character and her love interest. I thought it would be easy—Girl-alien meets boy, girl-alien and boy fall in love, boy pisses girl-alien off, and…well you’ll just have to read the book.

Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it? I learned a lot about the dark matter in our universe. Did you know 85% of our universe is invisible and composed of dark matter. (I think I found some of that dark matter on my window…hmmm)

How do you promote this book? Not well enough. Lol. Seriously, that is my weakest part about being an author—I’m terrible at promotion. I’m on Facebook, twitter, google plus, linkedin, belong to several online writing groups, ads on bookbub, ereader news (when I can find a spot), blogging, let me see, what else? I’ve yet to walk down the street carrying a placard, and I don’t think I ever will…
Will you write others in this same genre? Yes, THE LEARNER is book one of a trilogy, The Learner Series. Book Two is ALLEGIANCE, and book three is tentatively titled WAR. Both these titles could change though.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? No real message—I write stories that I hope will entertain the reader. If the reader is entertained and feel they got “their money’s worth”, then I’m satisfied.
